With the spheres of influence in the artworld shifting and digital sales fluctuating in the wake of global events, where is the market heading now? This panel brings the gallerists Elena Soboleva of David Zwirner and Florence Bonnefous of Air de Paris together with the economist Dr. Clare McAndrew to reflect on the findings of the Art Basel and UBS Global The Art Market 2022 report and to offer insight from their respective experiences.

‣ Dr Clare McAndrew is a cultural economist who specializes in the arts, antiques and collectibles markets. She completed her PhD in economics at Trinity College Dublin in 2001, where she also lectured and taught economics for four years. In 2002, Clare joined US firm Kusin & Company, a boutique investment banking firm specializing in art investment, as chief economist. After three years in the United States, Clare returned to Europe in 2005, and continued her work in the art market in a private research and consulting capacity for a global client base. She set up ‘Arts Economics’ in 2005 to focus her efforts on art market research and analysis, and works with a network of private consultants and academic scholars in different regions around the world providing research and consulting services to the global art trade and financial sector.

‣ Elena Soboleva is the Global Head of Online Sales at David Zwirner, where she leads programming and strategy for the gallery’s worldwide digital sales channels. In Soboleva’s tenure, the gallery has pioneered an online secondary market consignment tool, global livestream selling events, interactive art fair digital presentations, WeChat online sales series, among other industry innovations and 100+ online presentations.
Elena has over a decade of experience in the art and technology space. Prior to joining David Zwirner in 2018, she was a Specialist and then Lead Curator at Artsy, where she curated commissions, performances and major site-specific installations. Elena holds an MA in Contemporary Art and a BA in Art and Economics from the University of Toronto.

‣ Florence Bonnefous co-founded ‘Air de Paris’ in Nice in 1990 with Edouard Merino. ‘Air de Paris’ moved to Paris in 1995 and then participated in the creation of a new gallery district on Louise Weiss street in 1997. They are participating in a new adventure with Komunuma in Romainville in the Grand Paris area, and it is now on 666 m² that they pursue an intuitive and demanding exhibition program. They now plan to take over the premises of ‘La cédille qui sourit’ (‘The Smiling Cedilla’, George Brecht and Robert Filliou, 1965-68) in Villefranche-sur-Mer.

‣ Melanie Gerlis became the weekly art market columnist for the Financial Times in 2016. She was previously Art Market Editor for The Art Newspaper (2007-2016), before which she was a financial communications adviser at Finsbury in the City of London (1996-2005). She has a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University and an MA in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Her first book, Art as an Investment?, was published in 2014 and her latest book, The Art Fair Story: A Rollercoaster Ride, was published in December 2021 (Lund Humphries).
